About the Project

The focus for the Recreational Trails Master Plan is recreational trails managed by the City of West Kelowna's Parks Department. Recreational Trails are distinct from Active Transportation Routes which provide safe, reliable transportation between City neighbourhoods and destinations and are managed by the City's Engineering Department through the Transportation Master Plan. Trails managed by others like the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO), Westbank First Nation (WFN), non-profit organizations, or others are also outside the scope of this plan, though they are considered in planning as part of the broader network. Why are we Updating the Plan?
It has been a decade since West Kelowna’s first Recreational Trails Master Plan was developed. Now, we want to update it to reflect the changes we have seen in our community such as increasing demand, changes in activities, growth in our city, and more. We are committed to maintaining a high-quality recreational trails network that will serve community members of all ages and abilities, while respecting the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Parks Master Plan

Since parks and recreational trails are closely linked, we are updating the Parks Master Plan and the Recreational Trails Master Plan together. We’d love to hear your feedback on the Draft Parks Master Plan as well by May 31, 2024. Learn more at ourwk.ca/parks

Project Timeline

Defining Recreational Trails

In the 2013 Recreational Trails Master Plan, the City was in the early stages of defining the interconnected scope of trails. There was little distinction between recreational trails and active transportation routes. Since then, these networks have become increasingly distinct.

The table below summarizes key differences between Recreational Trails and Active Transportation Routes. These networks have separate plans, but are coordinated through ongoing collaboration.
