Questions & Answers
In 2020, improvements were completed to Majoros Park and are not related to the Gellatly-Carrington roundabout project. Improvements to Carate Park (located at the base of Majoros Road) will start later this year to add a nature path meandering between two pollinator gardens, with benches, shade trees, a picnic area, and a natural wood play structure. The Carate Park project is being led by the Parks Department, which is separate from the roundabout project.
What is the project scope?
The project scope includes transportation improvements with the construction of a roundabout at the Gellatly-Carrington intersection. There is also a proposal for an asphalt multi-use pathway from Witt Road to Boucherie Road. Construction is valued at $1.32 million.
How was the design determined?
There have been several Traffic Impact Assessments (TIA's) completed for this intersection, in conjunction with an analysis of the Gellatly/Hwy 97 intersection. These TIA's directly contributed to the design and development of the roundabout. A third-party traffic consultant collected and analyzed all recent traffic data related to safety, capacity needs and latent demand.
How is the project being funded?
The project is 80 per cent funded by Development Cost Charges.
What is a Development Cost Charge?
Municipalities and regional districts levy development cost charges on new development to pay for new or expanded infrastructure such as sewer, water, drainage, parks and roads necessary to adequately service the demands of that new development.
Why can't through traffic be maintained at this intersection?
Technical considerations, safety and efficiencies of the project are the main reasons for the closure of the intersection during the day. The intersection will remain open outside of construction hours during evenings and weekends.
The construction schedule is subject to change. Every effort will be made to expedite the completion when possible.
When will the traffic detour start?
We expect the intersection to be closed beginning the week of April 19 with construction to be complete in September 2021.
A traffic detour will be in place weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for approximately 10 weeks. The intersection will be open to traffic evenings and weekends. We recognize this construction will impact drivers and pedestrians for a short period of time, but will greatly benefit the area by improving safety and flow of traffic.
During the detour, what is the best way to access Superstore or Save on Foods?
To access Superstore, follow the detour route along Gellatly, Boucherie, Ridge Estates Drive, Elk, Carrington and use Butt Road to cross Highway 97.
To access Save on Foods, follow the detour route along Gellatly Road South, Hwy 97 and then take a right on Elliot Road.
Alternatively, drivers can use the Gellatly-Carrington intersection after 6 p.m. or on weekends as the intersection will be open to the public.
Is the construction of Carate Park related to the Gellatly-Carrington project?
Can you adjust the traffic signal lights at Butt Road and Hwy 97 to allow additional vehicles to cross the highway?
