West Kelowna's Accessible Active Transportation Audit
Update Nov. 7: Thank you to everyone who submitted an application. The application period has now closed, and selected individuals will be contacted for an interview.
The City of West Kelowna is seeking up to 10 community members to help review the accessibility of active transportation infrastructure in Westbank Centre.
This work will help the City identify and address barriers to mobility within the community and make sidewalks, bus stops, bike lanes, and intersections safer and more inclusive for everyone.
About the project
This is a pilot project, funded by Age-friendly BC. There are three key goals:
- Train community members to complete basic accessibility audits that can be used to improve City infrastructure.
- Complete an active transportation audit of the Westbank Centre.
- Inform the City on how to improve Active Transportation infrastructure.
What is active transportation?
Active transportation is the movement of people or goods powered by human activity. This includes walking, cycling, and the use of human powered or hybrid mobility tools such as wheelchairs, scooters, e-bikes, rollerblades, snowshoes, and more.
The infrastructure for active transportation includes:
- Pedestrian facilities (sidewalks, crosswalks, etc.)
- Multi-use facilities like paths and signage
- Cycling facilities like bike lanes, storage for bicycles, and repair stations
- Other features that support mobility like curb cuts, lighting, rest areas, and more.
Who can apply?
We are looking for up to 10 people to join the committee and help complete audits of active transportation infrastructure in West Kelowna.
The City welcomes applications from all residents, including people with lived or living experience of disability or who experience transportation or mobility challenges.
Applications are being accepted until Friday, Nov. 7, 2025.
What will you do as a community auditor?
Committee members will be expected to:
- Attend a virtual or in person training on the auditing tools in November.
- Complete a series of audits of active transportation infrastructure in Westbank Centre between November 2025 and February 2026.
- Submit their audit findings through an online tool. For this project, audit participants will need to be comfortable using technology such as phone applications or online webpages, either on their own or with support.
- Provide feedback on the audit findings and process (verbally or written).
- This is expected to require a 10-hour time commitment during the pilot project.
Auditors will be compensated for their time with a cash honoraria. This honoraria will be an hourly rate of $25/hour for attending training, completing audits, and attending required meetings.
Why is Westbank Centre the focus of this project?
The Westbank Centre has been selected because planned work to improve the area will be happening over the coming years. By auditing an area that is already scheduled for infrastructure work, the City will be able to learn and apply the learnings as part of planned work instead of as an afterthought.
