Project scope

We're improving how our community gets around! The $6.15 million active transportation corridor project includes construction of a roundabout at the Shannon Lake-Bartley-Stevens Roads intersection and bike lane and sidewalk improvements east of Dominion Road to Westlake Road. The entire project is expected to be complete in summer 2022.

Council’s 2021 – 2022 Strategic Priorities Invest in Infrastructure objectives include active transportation upgrades to the Shannon Lake corridor to enhance safety, access and traffic flow. This investment will promote economic prosperity, contribute to health, well-being and reduce emissions.

  • Phase 1: relocated overhead and underground utilities, built a retaining wall and portions of the new roundabout at the Shannon Lake-Bartley-Stevens intersection.
  • Phase 2: Completed construction of the roundabout, added sidewalks and bike lanes east of Dominion Road to Westlake Road.

As part of the design for the Shannon Lake-Bartley-Stevens intersection, a thorough review of the current and future traffic demands for the intersection for all vehicle types and other alternative modes of getting around was completed. This independent review took into consideration the near term and what we could expect in the next 20 years.

Sidewalks and bike lanes

We are investing in the community to build a brighter future. Improving pedestrian and cycling access in the Shannon Lake active transportation corridor will provide a key connection to the West Kelowna Business Park.

  • Sidewalks will be installed on Stevens Road from Dominion Road to Westlake Road
  • Bicycle lanes will be added to both sides of Shannon Lake Road
  • As part of the project, bike lanes and sidewalks will be extended from the east of the Shannon Lake Road bridge over McDougall Creek. The new sidewalks and bike lanes will connect to the existing sidewalks and bike lanes that extend to the Crystal Springs community along the south side of Shannon Lake Road.

Benefits of a roundabout

  • Pollution reduction: Significant reduction in vehicle idling results in less fuel burned into the atmosphere
  • Safety: All vehicles travel in the same direction, never crossing paths. This reduces the number of serious crashes and slower speeds also provide drivers with more time to react and make decisions.
  • Community benefits: Roundabouts provide traffic calming measures and reduce speeds
  • Improved traffic flow: Reduce required idling times at intersections
